Rapid Roller Door with Automated Robotic Access Control
Integrated Rapid Door with a Robotic QR-Triggered Access System
Focus Doors was engaged by a leading food service provider to supply, install and commission a rapid roller door at their new distribution facility in Regional NSW. The project required close integration with the customer’s state-of-the-art automated robotics system, with the door triggered to open and close via a QR code as robots approached. Measuring 3m x 3m, the door was installed on the boundary between a coolroom and an ambient-temperature area, adding a further layer of technical complexity to the installation.
The Challenge: Automating a Large-Format Door Around a Live Robotic Fleet
The new distribution facility relies on a fleet of automated robots to move stock between a coolroom and an ambient-temperature area, with no human operators triggering the door manually. This meant the rapid door had to be fully integrated with the customer’s robotics system, opening and closing automatically as each robot approached and scanned its QR code, with no room for delays or miscommunication between systems.
At 3m x 3m, the door also needed to handle a large opening while cycling quickly enough to keep pace with continuous robot traffic. Because it sat directly between a coolroom and an ambient environment, maintaining an effective thermal seal was critical, the door had to open and close fast enough to protect the cold chain, without ever holding up a robot mid-cycle.
Getting the balance right between automation, speed and temperature control was essential to keeping the facility’s automated operations running smoothly from day one.
The Solution: Custom Integration Between the Door and the Robotics System
Focus Doors worked closely with the customer’s automation and engineering teams to understand exactly how the robotic fleet operated, including robot approach paths, QR code scanning points and the timing tolerances the system required.
The rapid door was supplied, installed and commissioned to respond directly to the QR-triggered signal from the robotics system, opening automatically as a robot approached and closing again immediately behind it. This kept the coolroom’s thermal seal intact for as much of each cycle as possible, while still meeting the operational tempo of the facility’s automated fleet.
Commissioning included on-site testing with the robots themselves, allowing the Focus Doors team to fine-tune door cycle speed and response timing so the door and the robotics system worked together as a single, reliable process rather than two systems bolted together.
The Outcome: A Seamlessly Automated Rapid Door Solution
The 3m x 3m rapid door was successfully supplied, installed and commissioned, fully integrated with the customer’s automated robotics system. Robots now trigger the door via QR code as they approach, with the door opening and closing automatically and without any manual intervention.
The finished installation maintains the separation between the coolroom and the ambient-temperature area while keeping pace with the facility’s automated operations, giving the customer a rapid door solution built specifically around the way their robotic fleet actually works.
